I-CAN taster day ignites enthusiasm among prospective students

For care-experienced young people, the path to independence is not always clear or straightforward.

The I-CAN programme, a pioneering new project led by the University of Roehampton, is set to deliver clinical skills and training to help care-leavers take the next step and pursue a career in the health sector.

Launched in May 2024, the programme aims to match talented care-experienced people with acute workforce shortages. The I-CAN programme not only addresses pressing staffing needs but also empowers care-experienced individuals by equipping them with the necessary training and qualifications to build successful careers in healthcare.

The taster session on the 19 June was led by I-CAN Trainer and Nursing Lecturer, Scott Rodden and Philip Mills, Roehampton’s I-CAN Manager. The session included talks by Dr Jose Magalhaes, Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange Development and 2nd year Adult Nursing Student, Aoife.

Dr Aleata Alstad-Calkins, Director of Student Support and Success also gave a talk about student support at Roehampton, and tutor, Rasmos Tagoe, spoke about the importance of functional skills training.

Across eight weeks, I-CAN participants receive mentorship, hands-on training, and educational resources tailored to prepare them for the demands of health and care professions, ultimately enhancing their employability and career prospects.

Since the launch event, over 25 referrals to the programme have been received and 13 of those signed up for its first cohort which started earlier this week.

One attendee from the taster session commented: “[It’s] a very interesting course with great support and direction. I enjoyed the taster day and feel prepared for a new career. I would like to say that the team have been great, and they provided exceptional care, time and energy in preparing this course for everyone… it was excellent, very informative and delivered in a professional manner.”

A second cohort of the programme is set to take place in the autumn, with additional information about how to get involved coming soon.
