The Power Behind South London’s BIG Ambition

“No man is an island, entire of itself” (John Donne)
South London is a remarkable place to live, work, and study. Yet, it is too easy to overlook just how much it offers and take for granted what is on our doorsteps. From stunning green spaces and a thriving creative sector, to top-quality educational and research institutions and vibrant high streets, South London is home to highly recognised culture, heritage, sports venues and global business head offices. And this list could go on.
But what binds all of these strengths together? In my view, there are three defining contributors.
- A Commitment to Partnership
Too often, “partnership” is treated as a tick box exercise – something to say rather than something to do. But here in South London, partnerships are brought to life through action, trust, and shared purpose.
A meaningful partnership is a collaborative relationship built to achieve mutual goals. Its real power lies in synergy – doing more together than any one partner could do alone. In an era where innovation, speed, and adaptability are key to survival, partnerships unlock new markets, strengthen capabilities, and drive long-term growth.
That’s why the BIG Ambition: South London Growth initiative is so vital. This bold plan is the result of collaboration between the boroughs of Sutton, Croydon, Kingston, Merton, and Richmond, working in alignment with the Mayor of London’s Growth Plan. It aims to generate inclusive economic growth and create jobs across high-impact sectors such as health and life sciences, creative and digital industries, and environmental innovation.
- A Strong Innovation Mindset
To me, the innovative mindset is critical to how we should work. It is our way of thinking that embraces curiosity, continuous improvement, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. It is about seeing problems as opportunities and being open to new ideas, processes, and perspectives – regardless of how things have always been done.
People and organisations with an innovation mindset actively seek change rather than resist it. They foster environments where creativity, experimentation, and learning from failure are encouraged and rewarded. In a world of constant disruption and rapid technological change, an innovation mindset isn’t optional – it’s essential. The partners in South London that cultivate this mindset are more adaptable, more creative, and better positioned to lead rather than react.
- A People-First Approach
Finally, the most important element of South London’s success is our focus on people.
I have the privilege of seeing up close how many of our local partners – especially in Kingston – place people at the heart of everything they do.
Whether it’s ensuring inclusive access to skills development, supporting wellbeing, or improving employment pathways, there is a clear commitment to creating opportunities that benefit everyone. As the labour market evolves post-pandemic, the very definition of work and profession is shifting. That’s why it’s crucial that South London continues to invest in new and future skills, alternative qualifications, and inclusive talent pipelines.
This people-first focus doesn’t just strengthen our economy – it enhances our communities.
